Veteran's Day

The third grade got together for a Veteran's Day presentation.  Mrs. Bitton's uncle and cousin are both veterans.  They came and talked about their experiences to the students.  The kids were very attentive and interested.  The students sang two songs for them.  They sang the "Thank You" song and a song called "Welcome Home."  The songs brought tears to my eyes.  After the presentation, the women that were with the speakers had the kids sing the songs again so they could videotape them.  They said the songs really touched them.  I love that Mrs. Stewart teaches our students meaningful songs that they can share.

Food Drive- Multiplication

The student council is hosting a fund drive at our school for the Tremonton Food Pantry.  There are a lot of people out there that need assistance with the way the economy has been lately.   Please have your child bring a donation if you can.  The class that brings in the most items will get a prize.  The school goal is to bring in 1,000 pounds of food. Anything that you have extra would really be appreciated.


This past week we have been introducing multiplication.  It is a huge concept in third grade for students to understand.  Please ask your child when multiplication can be used.  We are stressing that it is repeated addition, or in other words, when we have equal groups.  We have also been working on drawing arrays (a picture of equal rows representing a multiplication sentence).  The other concept we are stressing is having the students write their own multiplication story for a number sentence.  Ex: 3x4=12   Jim had three bags of marbles with 4 bags in each.  How many marbles does he have?  Many students are still struggling with these.  The want to say, "Jim has 3 marbles and John has 4.  How many is that?"  It is important for them to realize the second example is not a multiplication story, but an addition story because it is not showing equal groups. 

I have a wonderful class of very respectful students.  I can tell they have great families that teach them good things!  Thanks for sharing these children with me!
