Today during our assembly, our class got to be the dancers during the PRO song.  They did an awesome job!

Cartoons and Cereal

The kids that earned their January reading goal got to have cartoons and cereal today at school.  It was a lot of fun.  They definitely earned this reward.

Thank You and Ringing in the New Year

Thanks so much for the wonderful turn-out for parent/teacher conferences the last two nights!  It was wonderful to get to visit with each of you, and discuss your child's progress.  I have such an incredible class!  Here are photos of our class ringing in the New Year.....2011!  It is going to be a great year!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Don't forget that this Wednesday, January 26th, and Thursday, January 27th are reserved for parent/teacher conferences.  Wednesday the students get out of school at 12:55, but Thursday is a normal school day with students being dismissed at 2:55.  If you don't remember when your conference time is scheduled for, please do not hesitate to call the school and I will let you know (435) 257-2590.  Thanks for all of your support and I will see you either Wednesday or Thursday. Thanks for letting me teach your children, I have a great class!

January Reading Goal

The January reading incentive activity is coming up on January 28th.  To meet the goal for our classroom, all of the student's homework pages for January must be completed (with the 20 minutes of reading per night four nights per week).  If they meet the goal, their fish gets moved on the wall in the hallway, and for January they earn cereal and cartoons.  Mr. Chadaz and I picked up the cases of cereal today from Malt-o-Meal that they donated for this activity.  If you know someone who works at Malt-o-Meal, let them know how much we appreciate their help.  On January 28th, we will have a cartoon piped through the system for a half an hour and the students will have cereal.  If your child does not meet the goal, they will have a work session in another classroom during that time.  It should be a lot of fun!  Encourage your child to read and get their homework papers turned in to class. 

New Information

We have a new student teacher in our classroom this week.  Her name is Miss Oyler.  She will be with us for six weeks and then will transfer to fifth grade. She will be sending home a letter introducing herself Friday in the students' take home folders.  Remember, Monday Jan. 17th is Human Right's Day, so there will be no school.  On Tuesday the 18th we have our mid-year DIBELS testing.  Make sure your child reads on Monday so they aren't rusty when they come to school on the 18th!  We have parent/teacher conferences coming up January 26th and 27th.  Please contact me if you know you have a conflict either of those days as I am trying to put together notes with conference times.  It is difficult to fit all 30 students in at times that are convenient for parents, but I will do my best!  This is a great group of students.  Thanks for sharing them with me!

January

I can't believe it is already 2011!  I guess time really does fly when you are having fun.  Just a reminder that our homework is given out every Monday and then it is due back on Friday.  Homework should only last 30 minutes per night.  The students have spelling words to write, a couple of minutes of math review (they should bring home thier timed test from school each night and they can work on the back side of it), and then should read for approximately 20 minutes (or until their 30 minutes of homework is complete).  Our reading reward each month is based on if the homework is brought back to school or not.  I have the same few children each month hurridly staying in from break trying to catch up their missing homework pages so they can go to the reward activity.  I am going to start not letting that happen.  The homework is to be done at home nightly, so if it is not done, they will miss the activities.  I am not trying to be mean, but research shows that 10 minutes per grade level of homework is helpful in a child's academic success.  On another note, please make sure your child is coming to school dressed appropriately for the weather.  On extremely frigid days, the children are allowed to stay inside, but we try and have them outside for break as much as possible.  On January 10th, we will be having a student teacher start in our room for 6 weeks.  I am excited to welcome her to our class.  She will be sending home a letter introducing herself.  I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break.  Breaks are wonderful and refreshing, but it is always nice to get back in a schedule again. I love teaching this great group of kids!

Vacation is over!  I can't wait to see you tomorrow morning at school!  I hope you had a great break and are gearing up for a great week!  Make sure and dress warm for breaks outside!
